Find the best 3DTVs

A 3D TV can broadcast content in both traditional 2D formats, as well as upgraded 3D broadcasts. If you’re in the market for a 3D television, there are a few things you should know before starting your search.

First, 3D TVs are available in both LCD and plasma models. Look for a minimum refresh rate of 120 hertz, but if you want to guarantee the best possible picture quality, choose a model with a 240 hertz refresh rate. Also, keep in mind that you don’t have to commit to 3D TV technology right away; it is possible to buy a set that has 3D technology ready to go, but hasn’t yet implemented it. If you want to activate it, you will simply contact your television service provider to order the upgrade.

Also, keep in mind that you will need 3DTV glasses to enjoy the full picture quality. These aren’t always included with your purchase of the set, and you will need a pair for each member of your household if you want to watch 3D TV together.

Panasonic TC-P55VT30

This model has earned rave reviews as one of the best 3DTVs on the market. It is loaded with a full range of standard features, including composite and component video inputs and connection options for standard peripherals like game consoles and Blu-ray players. But what really sets it apart is Panasonic’s proprietary 3D picture technology, which is used to improve picture quality in the company’s standard 2D sets. This technology produces three-dimensional image detail in standard 2D pictures, but creates an experience like no other when upgraded to 3D broadcasts.

Also, Panasonic has outfitted this model with an astonishing refresh rate of 600 hertz, which ensures crisp, fluid motion and movement from frame to frame. The end result is 3D picture quality that is visceral and lifelike.

Keep in mind that only one pair of 3D glasses is included with the purchase of this television. If you require more glasses, you will have to purchase them from your retailer or directly from Panasonic. But on the whole, this model is the clear market leader, setting the standard for 3D broadcast technology. If you want to invest in a top of the line model, this product should merit some close consideration.

Specifications:

  • Refresh rate: 600 hertz
  • Screen size: 55 inches
  • USB ports: 3
  • Component inputs: 1
  • HDMI inputs: 4
  • Composite inputs: 1

LG 55LW6500

If saving a few hundred dollars is a priority for you, then LG’s 55LW6500 is well worth a look. While it doesn’t have as impressive a refresh rate as Panasonic’s flagship 3D TV, it does offer impressive picture quality and full connectivity options. It also has 2D to 3D conversion technology, which up until recently was a feature seen in only the most expensive models on the market.

In addition to outstanding color representation and depth, this LG 3D TV also comes with four sets of 3D TV glasses. If you need additional sets, they are affordably priced.

However, on the down side, this TV lags behind the market leaders in several key categories, particularly the refresh rate. It does provide excellent value for the price, doesn’t use much electricity, and has an impressive viewing angle of 178 degrees.

Specifications:

  • Refresh rate: 240 hertz
  • Screen size: 55 inches
  • USB ports: 2
  • Component inputs: 2
  • HDMI inputs: 4
  • Composite inputs: 2
  • Viewing angle: 178 degrees

This 3D TV also has an outstanding contrast ratio and full Internet connectivity (even though the Internet interface has a few shortcomings).

However, this model is priced very high, and while it does offer incredible picture quality and a perfect viewing angle, there are models out there that offer a comparable experience for a significantly lower price.

Specifications:

  • Refresh rate: 240 hertz
  • Screen size: 55 inches
  • USB ports: 3
  • Component inputs: 1
  • HDMI inputs: 4
